Embarking on a year abroad is an exhilarating experience that promises personal growth, cultural immersion, and academic evolution. As I reflect on my transformative journey, I can proudly say that my year abroad in Ireland, specifically completing the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing program at SETU Carlow, has exceeded all my expectations. From the breathtaking landscapes to the warm-hearted people, Ireland has become a second home, and the knowledge and experiences gained during my time at SETU Carlow have shaped me into a more confident and capable individual.
Embracing a New Culture: The moment I set foot in Ireland, I was captivated by its charm and rich cultural heritage. From the vibrant music scene to the ancient castles scattered across the country, Ireland offered a tapestry of experiences that were both immersive and enlightening. I eagerly embraced the local customs, indulged in traditional Irish cuisine, and participated in lively pub sessions, immersing myself in the Irish way of life. The warm and welcoming nature of the Irish people made me feel at home, and their sense of humour and love for storytelling created lasting memories and friendships.

Exploring Ireland and Europe: While studying was my top priority, I also dedicated time to explore Ireland and the rest of Europe. From the rugged cliffs of the Cliffs of Moher to the mystical beauty of the Giant's Causeway, Ireland's natural wonders left me awe-inspired. I immersed myself in the lively atmosphere of Dublin, explored the quaint streets of Galway, and discovered the ancient history of Kilkenny. Traveling throughout the country allowed me to appreciate Ireland's unique blend of history, tradition, and breathtaking scenery. In addition, I’ve been able to explore the rest of the UK, Paris and plan to embark on further travels before returning to Canada in June.

Freelance Work: I was granted a leave of absence from my full-time job to complete my degree, which I am very grateful for. But living abroad can be expensive, so during my year of study I took on a small handful of freelance clients, to stay busy. For the last few years, I’ve taken on freelance clients and provided them with a variety of marketing and communication services as needed. My most recent clients include those within the sustainability and healthcare sectors. I enjoy taking on clients and assisting them in part-time/ casual capacities with their marketing and communication projects or strategies.

Personal Growth and Independence: Completing a year abroad requires adaptability, resilience, and the willingness to step out of one's comfort zone. Living in a foreign country challenged me to embrace uncertainty, make independent decisions, and develop a global mindset. Deciding to go abroad not knowing anyone is scary, but it also teaches you how to be self-reliant and comfortable in your own skin. Studying abroad also allowed me to form new friendships with people from different backgrounds, with the same desire to get degrees and have a fun time while doing so.
As I conclude my year abroad in Ireland, I cannot help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and accomplishment. Completing the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing program at SETU Carlow has not only provided me with a more solidified foundation in marketing but has also shaped me into a more confident, adaptable, and globally aware individual. I am excited to return to Canada and bring my new-found knowledge with me.
