Life at SETU Carlow

So… how’s Ireland going so far?

Short answer, AMAZING!

South East Technological University (Carlow Campus)

Since starting at South East Technological University (SETU) Carlow in September, life has been a whirlwind between classes, making new friends, and exploring.

Being back in class, actually “in” class, following the pandemic has been great. I missed the dynamic energy my AMC program group had in the classroom and was excited to see what the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing program energy would be.

One of my biggest worries would be that I would find the course content repetitive to what I completed during my advanced diploma, and although there is a crossover, I am taking many new courses and adding to my marketing and communications toolkit! Courses I am taking include International Marketing, Category Management, Strategic Management, Digital Marketing and Brand Management. I’ve found all of the courses highly applicable to my current role at Loyalist Township and past roles at Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College. I am very excited to bring this newfound knowledge back with me.

Recently, I have also started working on my undergraduate dissertation, with my topic being “Quiet Quitting: An Analysis of Social Media’s Impact on the Workforce Movement.” I got inspired to research Quiet Quitting after witnessing the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the workforce and after talking with friends, family and colleagues who were reevaluating what they wanted for their jobs, careers, and lives. It’s a movement that transcends generations, sectors, and geography due to the social media marketing aspect of the movement. I plan to conduct primary research via in-depth interviews, focus groups and surveys next semester, and would love for my network to participate!

Don’t worry though, it hasn’t been all work and no play. I’ve been exploring Ireland for the last few months and have travel plans for Britain, Scotland, Wales, France and more over the next few months!

To keep busy and to have some extra income coming in during my studies, I’ve been completing freelance marketing and communications work for clients in the pharmaceutical, sustainability and photography sectors. This part-time freelance work has been a great way to stay active professionally during my studies without fear of burnout, as I work on my own schedule.

It was scary to fly to another country for a year without any friends or family with me, but I am so glad I took the risk. I’ve learned so much during my first few months here and look forward to all of the experiences yet to come. Stay tuned to hear more about my studies and adventures in Ireland!
